The Nottinghamian: Warm hubs set up and what's on this week

Here is The Nottinghamian from Monday, December 12:

Hello,

Today's edition of the Nottinghamian takes a look at how one advice centre is providing support to Nottingham communities this winter. It comes at a time where money is tight for many, including charitable organisations.

We will also take a look at a new fast food chain opening in the city as well as the top ten things to do this week in Nottingham.

Worried

Staff at St Ann’s Advice Centre in Nottingham have said their service users are 'worried' about the future. The centre has recently introduced a warm hub every Wednesday. Rachel Graham, a community engagement worker at the advice centre, said: "We had the idea before it became a government idea and launched it about four weeks ago.

“On a Wednesday, the centre is open until 8pm for the warm hub. We give people soup and a roll and those who come can play bingo. It’s been good, some people stay all day on a Wednesday. There are a lot of families that won’t have a full standard Christmas this year and the school holidays are a big thing as the heating will be on throughout the day. We also have families come to the warm hub which means children are understanding that they might have to go to another place to keep warm.”

Sally Marshall, advice centre supervisor, added: “People are worried, it’s fear of the unknown, we know nothing about next year but fuel will be through the roof and everything’s going up."

The advice centre is set to benefit from the Robin Hood Fund which has been relaunched by Nottinghamshire Live and the Nottingham Project to raise vital money for vulnerable people across the city. They say they will use the money to expand the warm hub and pay for an advice worker offer support. Rachel added: "It will benefit so many people.” Read more here.

Permission to trade

The Mansfield Road store in May (Google Maps)

A 24-hour off licence has been given permission to trade after concerns over street drinking and fighting were dismissed. The former owner of ’24 Express’ in Mansfield Road, Nottingham sold up following problems with their license to trade.

It now has a new owner and they sought a new premises license at a Nottingham City Council licensing panel meeting on December 12. The shop can open for 24 hours but the times for selling alcohol are restricted between 5am until midnight.

The previous operator continued to trade under a temporary notice while a new application was made, however they failed to get authorisation to trade for the hours they actually opened in. Nottinghamshire Police raised an objection and the council’s licensing committee refused to grant it a premises license on July 19 this year.

“Thus the previous operators resolved to sell up and on September 20, 2022, a new commercial lease was assigned to the new operator,” the representatives of the applicant said. The new applicant intends to continue running the shop as before. Read more here.

'Authentic' pizza

A new fast-food restaurant serving authentic Italian pizza is set to open on Mansfield Road in Nottingham. Fireaway Pizza is almost ready to open its doors and is set to offer a menu of real authentic Italian pizza.

The building has been transformed into the brand's signature orange and black colours along with a new sign above the doors. The brand is known for 'fresh artisan' pizza which is cooked in 180 seconds so pizza fans won't have to wait to grab a quick slice on the go. If customers feel like being creative, there is also an option to select the toppings you like and build your own using their bases.

The chain, which first opened in 2016, now has stores all over the UK including one in Mansfield. Dubbed 'the fastest-growing pizza chain'. The brand just opened its 100th store in Walsall earlier this year. Read more here.
