A 13-year-old girl has tragically died after falling through the attic floor of a youth centre during an Easter weekend event, leaving a community heartbroken and a family shattered.
Joeylin Kenley McDonald was attending a youth “kickback” event on Friday, April 18, at the Rocky Mountain SER (RMSER) after-school head start programme in Pueblo, Colorado, when the devastating incident occurred around 7 pm. Police say Joeylin had been exploring the upper floor of the building with four other young people when they discovered a ladder leading up to the attic, reported the Mirror.
Once inside, the group began walking across wooden beams. According to Pueblo Police, Joeylin lost her footing and fell through the ceiling, plummeting about 25 feet to the gym floor below. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her family has since identified her and shared an emotional tribute on a GoFundMe page created to help with funeral costs. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden and unimaginable loss of Joeylin,” they wrote. “She was bright, loving, and full of life. She lit up every room she entered, loved to dance, and brought joy and laughter everywhere she went.”
Joeylin had recently been honoured as Mrs. Spirit 2024, a title that her family said perfectly reflected her strength, positivity, and kindness. “She was not only fun-loving and kind but also an exceptional student with a future full of promise,” they added.
The page goes on to say that her death has left “an unfillable void” and that the family is now facing not only grief, but the unexpected financial burden of funeral expenses and time off work. “Every donation, no matter the size, is deeply appreciated,” the page reads. “And if you can’t give, please consider sharing.”
The Rocky Mountain SER described Joeylin as “a bright and beloved light in our community” and called her death “a devastating blow.” They added, “While the exact circumstances are still under investigation, we ask the Pueblo community and beyond to join us in lifting her family and friends in love and prayer.”
Services are yet to be confirmed as the family comes to terms with the heartbreaking loss. In the meantime, support is pouring in from across the community for a young girl whose life was tragically cut short far too soon.
