Here is The Nottinghamian from Thursday, November 10:
Hello,
Today's edition of the Nottinghamian focuses on the rising energy costs and the impact it is having on people across Nottingham. Winter is approaching and so are colder temperatures, leaving many worried about how it will affect their pockets. One of our reporters took a visit to an advice stall to see what help is available.
We also have news of a West Bridgford fish and chip restaurant edging a bit closer to winning a prestigious award as well as the reaction from a Basford shopkeeper after a woman won big on a ticket purchased there. Plus we have today's street style which features a classic look.
'Losing sleep'
Across Nottingham, pop up energy advice stalls have been hearing about people's financial concerns, where one pensioner is even considering working again. The British Gas Post Office pop ups have been providing people with advice no matter who their energy provider is and answer questions regarding energy bills.
The energy saving scheme, set up by rapper and British Gas partner Professor Green, has already been to Bulwell and Newark but will be in St Ann’s on December 6 and 7 on Wells Road. Cathleen Betteridge, 75, from Top Valley said: “I’m considering getting a job at 75 and I’ve not switched my gas on since March. Everyone’s the same at the moment, I feel sorry for those with kids."
Allan Davidson, 29, added: “It’s hard, you lose sleep at night over all these bills but the Government wouldn’t understand that, they’re fine. It’s ridiculous. Fuel and Energy Advisor with the British Gas Energy Trust, Aqeela Bashir said: “We’re helping a lot of people who are worried about bills and some who don't understand their statements. It's our job to give advice and tips.” Read more here.
One of the best
A Nottinghamshire chip shop that opened just seven months ago has made it down to the final five in prestigious national awards. The Cod's Scallops, located at the £20m Wilford Lane retail park in West Bridgford, has been shortlisted in the Restaurant of the Year in the National Fish & Chip Awards.
It is the only chip shop in Nottinghamshire to be shortlisted - and hopes to repeat the success of its sister shop in Wollaton which was crowned the best takeaway in the UK in 2020. The awards, which have been going for more than 30 years, celebrate the nation's favourite dish, while championing the eclectic eateries that hold up the popular British tradition.
The awards are the largest UK-wide event dedicated to raising standards across the industry whilst supporting fish and chip businesses. The winner will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards, hosted by the The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), on February 28, 2023 in London.

Trivia question: What was Goose Fair renowned for when it started? (Tip: it is food related but not geese!)
The answer to today’s trivia question is at the bottom of the newsletter.
Street style
Ruth Hardiman wore a "warm" and "classic" look as she was in the city centre. The 82-year-old said: "I usually, like a lot of people, see something and try it on then buy it." Ruth, who is originally from Manchester and lives in The Park, likes to shop in stores rather than online as she finds trying on clothes helps her decide if they are worth buying.
She usually buys from smaller shops but Ruth also enjoys browsing John Lewis. Ruth added: "I was always a fan of Country Casuals and I do like Max Mara." Over time, Ruth says her style has changed. She said: "I think I wear more layers now with older age." When asked to give a piece of style advice, Ruth said: "Always try it on and check the colour and care. But try it on is my big one."
Outfit breakdown:

Disbelief
The shopkeeper who sold a Basford woman a 'life changing' £300,000 lottery ticket has shared his disbelief. Karen Parkin, 51, won £300,000 on a National Lottery scratch card which she picked up while shopping at Sonia's Stores on Park Lane.
Shopkeeper Nayan Lad, whose wife sold the winning scratch card to Karen a few weeks ago, said the money was 'life changing' to his customer. "It happened a couple of weeks ago, my wife was the one who sold her the scratch card. It's a nice feeling - for such a good thing to happen to a regular customer," Mr Lad said.
He added: "You maybe expect a couple of quid and that is it, not to win the jackpot. Every little helps but that is a life changing amount of money. It is the first winner we have had in the six years we have been here. We know her quite well, she told us how she couldn't believe it when she came back into the shop - and we couldn't either. It's good for the shop as well. It might in bring extra people in to try their luck."
