The most used emojis of 2023 have been revealed

The most used emojis of 2023 have been revealed, letting you see if your use of these special text characters are just like everyone else’s.

These stats come from Emojipedia, a website that collates information on the thousands of emojis available as part of the Unicode character system.

“The most-used emojis of 2023 were a selection of the absolute classics from the emoji keyboard,” Keith Broni, editor in chief of Emojipedia, told Yahoo

As always, however, the big question is: do you cry-laugh with a straight or tilted face?

The most popular emojis in 2023

Here’s the top 10 list:

  1. 😂:Crying with laughter
  2. 🤣:Rolling on the floor laughing
  3. ❤️:Red heart
  4. 🙏:Folded hands
  5. 😭:Loudly crying
  6. 😍:Heart eyes
  7. ✨:Sparkles
  8. 🔥:Fire
  9. 😊:Smiling face with smiling eyes
  10. 🥰:Smiling face with hearts

There are no fly-by-night additions in this list, and the ranking is actually exactly the same as the one Emojipedia revealed in mid-2023 for World Emoji Day, as published by USA Today

Broni says he doesn’t see the top ranking emojis being shifted any time soon either. “With its track record, I believe ‘crying with laughter’ will remain at number one next year. Other laughter emojis will continue to be the most popular across the world,” he says.

Emojis are part of the Unicode system. And while they may seem like fluff, all emojis have to be approved by the Unicode Consortium before they are added to the roster.

118 of these emojis were added in 2023. Most of them fill out the gender, skin colour and disability spectrums for existing designs, but we also got a lime wedge, head shaking emojis, a brown mushroom, a rising phoenix and a broken chain design

You’ll have to wait for software updates on your phone to use them in messages, though.

There are currently 3782 emojis in the Unicode system, which was last updated in September 2023 in its 15.1 release. If there’s an emoji you’re hoping for, the next update is planned for September 2024.

In November 2023, 10-year-old boy Teddy Cottle from Oxfordshire raised a petition asking for the “nerd” emoji to be changed to the “genius” emoji, and for the removal of the buck teeth seen in Apple’s version used by iPhones.

“I think people who wear glasses are cool and I am worried that people who are getting glasses for the first time will think they are going to look like rabbits or rats,” Teddy wrote.

However, while Apple could well tweak the design of the nerd emoji seen on iPhones, it’s actually the Unicode Consortium that would have to instate a new “genius” emoji.
