The hardest schools to get a place at in Newport

Around two thirds of Newport's state primary schools were oversubscribed this year, figures have shown. 28 out of the city's 44 state primary schools had more preferences expressed than the number of places which were available for the 2022/2023 academic year.

Data from Newport City Council shows that Rogerstone Primary had 164 preferences expressed from parents for only 60 places, while Jubilee Park Primary had 147 preferences expressed - more than triple the number of places (45) which were available.

The deadline for applications for parents to send their children to primary schools in Newport is 5pm on Wednesday, January 11, with decisions issued on April 17. In schools which are oversubscribed, the council has criteria for how it allocates places, which includes prioritising looked-after children, pupils living within the catchment area and those who have siblings in the school. You can find out more here.

Only 16 primary schools in Newport saw fewer, or equal, preferences than the number of places available. Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Gwenlli had the fewest preferences expressed (11) for 30 places.
