The cost of NHS prescriptions will rise from this weekend

Prescription costs across England will increase from the start of next month.

The Department for Health and Social Care confirmed that prescription charges will increase by the inflation rate of 3.21 per cent on Saturday, April 1. On average, the single charge of prescriptions will rise from £9.35 to £9.65.

Meanwhile, the cost of prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) will also increase. According to the government, 3-month PPC increases by £1 to £31.25 and 12-month PPC increases by £3.50 to £111.60 while the recently introduced HRT PPC will cost £19.30.

It's important to note that these prescription charges will only affect England as Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have not been using them for over a decade. The charges will also not apply to everyone as many people will still be eligible for free prescriptions such as those over the 60s, under 16s, 16 to 18-year-olds in full-time education, as well as NHS patients.

If you're worried about the rising cost of prescriptions, you may be eligible for free prescriptions. To check if you are, head over to the NHS website.
