The cheapest supermarket in the UK where shoppers could save £27 per basket

Shoppers could save almost £27 per shop at Aldi compared to the UK's most expensive store in November, new research shows.

As food inflation continues to soar, households will be hunting for ways to chop down their grocery costs - especially in the lead up to Christmas.

Fortunately, Which? have researched the UK's cheapest supermarket, naming Aldi and Asda as the most cost-effective places to shop. The experts reported that a basket of groceries at Aldi cost £77.21 on average in November while the same purchases at Waitrose would put consumers back £104.11.

The consumer experts worked out the cost of an average basket by comparing the prices of a shop consisting of 48 popular groceries at eight of the UK's biggest supermarkets.

In second place for the cheapest basket came Lidl, costing £78.57 on average for the 48 items which included groceries like Kenco coffee, Oxo stock cubes and PG Tips tea bags as well as own-label products.

Asda £87.66
Sainsbury's £89.85
Morrisons £93.49
Ocado £96.09
Waitrose £104.11

The big four - Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons - all cost at least £10 more than Aldi, with Morrison's costing the most out of the popular supermarkets at £93.49.

Which? also looked at trolley prices by comparing the costs of 149 items. Asda won out, continuing its winning streak that started back in January 2020.

It cost £355.34 on average at Asda for the larger shop, beating the next cheapest, Sainsbury's, by £11.49.

Waitrose was an eye-watering £38.03 more expensive than Asda, coming in at £393.37 on average with the second most pricey option being Ocado.

Asda £355.34
Sainsbury's £366.83
Tesco £375.90
Morrisons £377.83
Ocado £380.44
Waitrose £393.37

The consumer champion is calling on supermarkets to provide the support people around the country desperately need in order to keep food on the table during the ongoing cost of living crisis.

"No one wants to overpay for basic groceries, especially in the build-up to the festive season when many household budgets will be stretched," said Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor.

"Our findings show that while prices are going up, some supermarkets are significantly more expensive than others.

"As well as choosing a supermarket that is cheap overall, other ways to save include swapping from branded to supermarket own-brand products, sticking to a shopping list, and resisting the temptation to pick up special offers you don’t need."

The research comes as food inflation for November reached 12.4 percent to hit a new record, which is 7.4 percent higher than last November and up from 6.6 percent in October.

The British Retail Consortium chief executive Helen Dickinson told the PA News Agency: "Winter looks increasingly bleak as pressures on prices continue unabated."
