The 99p supermarket mince pie crowned 'the best' by Money Saving Expert's blind taste test

When it comes to picking the best of the best, it is often rather expensive and with people trying to save as much as they can at what is perhaps the most expensive time of the year, it is not surprising that people are searching the "cheapest mince pies".

But we think of the best, our mind may jump to expensive supermarkets with people listing the likes of M&S and Waitrose.

However in a blind Mince Pie taste test, carried out by the Deals Team at Money Saving Expert, one cam out on top and it costs just 99p.

Testing 10 pies from shops such as Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons, the team considered two questions which were "which one is your favourite?" and "which one do you think is the most expensive?"

The most expensive they taste tested were from Fortum and Mason at £12.95 as well as Waitrose at £2.25 a box and Marks and Spencer at £2. Meanwhile the cheapest that they tried were rom Tesco and Aldi - both costing 99p each for six.

After eating the festive treat, they named the top three 'tastiest' mince pies and the winner was Aldi.

Their Holly Lane Six Deep Filled Mince Pies cost 99p. This was followed by Marks and Spencer's Six All Butter Mince Pies costing £2 and in third place, they named Waitrose and their Six All Butter Mince Pies which comes in at £2.25 a box.

Discussing their winner the team said their mince pies tasted like "Christmas cake” and were "nicely spiced."

They added: "Clearly these MSE'rs are savvy at sniffing out a tasty deal with Aldi's 99p mince pics coming out top, beating the likes of M&S and Fortnum & Mason for taste.

"All three of the premium-priced mince pies were spotted too, and in the correct price order. Fortnum and Mason pies were a fairly easy spot, with their size giving the luxury game away. Waitrose, the second most expensive, was noticed for its 'pretty' design. Turns out you can judge a pie by its cover."
