Tesco to hire 15,000 extra workers this Christmas in huge recruitment drive

Tesco is hiring 15,000 temporary workers this Christmas to help customers during the busy festive season.

There are roles on offer in both Tesco superstores and smaller Extra convenience stores, with morning, day and evening shifts available.

Tesco said there may be opportunities for Christmas workers to apply for any permanent roles that are available.

Rachel Bushby, Tesco people director said: “We know times are tough out there at the moment, so this is a good opportunity for anyone looking to boost their income over the festive period or who needs to find a stepping stone back into the world of work.

“The jobs have traditionally been popular with students looking to earn some extra money during the holidays as well as people who simply want to help their local community to enjoy a great Christmas.

“The kinds of people we are looking for are those who work well in teams, are flexible and also love helping others and are prepared to make a special effort to achieve that.”

The seasonal jobs are now listed on the Tesco careers website.

It comes after Tesco announced it would give its staff a pay rise of 20p from November 13.

It means the hourly rate in stores will be £10.30, or £10.98 in London.

The supermarket agreed to bring forward pay rise talks to January 2023 after negotiations with union Usdaw.

But in not so good news for Tesco, the supermarket recently announced it will axe 325 roles across the UK.

The jobs being cut are in the firm's office and regional teams, not its supermarkets.

Tesco isn't the only retailer offering extra jobs this Christmas.

Aldi is to hire around 3,000 new workers - including over 2,000 temporary and permanent store positions.

In addition, Aldi is currently recruiting for more than 850 roles across its 11 distribution centres around the UK.

Permanent roles include warehouse selectors, logistics assistants and lorry drivers.

You can search for the latest Aldi jobs on its recruitment website.

Waitrose and John Lewis are recruiting for more than 10,000 seasonal positions.

The John Lewis Partnership, which owns John Lewis and Waitrose, will recruit 4,000 seasonal roles across 331 Waitrose shops.

This will include supermarket assistants, night shift workers and customer delivery drivers.

There will also be 2,000 temporary roles for 34 John Lewis stores, including sales and merchandising positions.
