Tesco locks protein bars in security boxes amid cost of living crisis

When you enter any supermarket, you expect to see many of the expensive items to have security tags attached to them, especially products like alcohol. What you don’t expect to see tagged is an item costing around £2 but that is exactly what one shopper discovered in Tesco.

The post shared by the account No Context Brits said: “Do other countries sell protein bars like this or are we just savages?” The post was accompanied by a picture of two different brands in security boxes as well as more on the shelf below with security tags wrapped around them.

Tesco bosses said items are placed in these boxes if they have been targetted by thieves 'a number of times'.

With over one million views and nearly 200 retweets, the comments section of the post was full of people from across the globe sharing items that are security tagged in their local stores as well as people from the UK confused over why they were tagged.

One commenter said: “People are going hungry. I’ve seen baby formula tagged in store. It’s heart-breaking."

Another said: “Never seen on protein bars. Butter however is tagged in many stores.”

While a third asked: “What area do you live in where they need to lock up £2 protein bars?” Someone else wrote: "I think the boxes they’re being locked in are probs worth more money…that says a lot."

While to us in the UK tagging items like this seems like a weird and abstract idea, people from other countries like the US claim that most medical items and even toothpaste are locked away in a glass cupboard.

Tesco explained that more items had been security tagged due to an increase in the number of times the items have been stolen from stores. They further explained that which items that are tagged varies from store to store, it’s not a universal policy and it’s definitely not a new thing.

It may seem like an extreme to most people, but for stores it’s a way of protecting stock in these difficult times.
