Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Aldi & Lidl: We compared supermarket diet cola with Diet Coke to see which is the best

Diet Coke has been around since the 1980s, and it is still a bestseller in the low-calorie drink market.

However, at £1.77 per two-litre bottle, it's not exactly cheap. We wanted to find out if there's a supermarket version that tastes just as good.

Here's what happened when we tried diet cola from Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl.

To do this, I bought a two-litre bottle of diet cola from each supermarket, as well as a bottle of the Coca-Cola branded original. I tried a glass of each, without ice or lemon, to see if I could taste the difference, and decide which one came out on top.

The biggest surprise was how different each supermarkets' version tasted. Sainsbury's' offering was so sweet, and left a bad taste in my mouth afterwards.

Aldi's diet cola had no flavour but was very fizzy. And Tesco's version was almost sour.

But some were very close to the original Diet Coke.

In a blind taste test, I would not have been able to tell the difference between the branded version and Asda's own diet cola.

Another great option was from Morrisons, which tasted only slightly sweeter but left no bad taste that can sometimes come along with own brand versions of fizzy drinks.

Unsurprisingly, all the branding was very similar, as you can see from the pictures.

Which diet cola was best?

After trying all of the supermarket offerings, I must say that none were as nice as the original Diet Coke.

Here's my rankings:

  1. Diet Coke
  2. Asda
  3. Lidl
  4. Morrisons
  5. Sainsbury's
  6. Aldi
  7. Tesco

Full list of prices:

Diet Coke: £1.77

Sainsburys: 42p

Aldi: 42p

Lidl: 42p

Asda: 60p

Tesco: 60p

Morrisons: 59p

If you're looking for the cheapest option, then you can grab a two litre bottle of diet cola from Sainsbury's, Lidl or Aldi for 42p. I would only recommend that if you're gong to be mixing something in, or maybe if you're serving with fresh fruit and ice.

If you're buying in bulk, it's justifiable to go for the cheapest option and not have to worry about the price. But if you're just buying one bottle, for me it's worth the spend to get that iconic Diet Coke taste.
