Tasmania's COVID-19 hospitalisations rise to 39, as the state records 625 new cases

Tasmania has recorded 39 COVID-19-related hospitalisations, up from Saturday's 31, and 625 new cases.

Three patients are in ICU as the state's total of active cases reaches 5,650.

Authorities confirmed that 16 patients are being treated specifically for COVID-19 symptoms.

And, of the new cases, 386 were identified through a rapid antigen test and 239 through a PCR swab.

In the past 24 hours, 721 patients have been released from quarantine.

Two patients have died since the border reopening on December 15, one on Saturday and one on Friday.

Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff said he understood the person who died yesterday was not vaccinated.

He said they were "extremely unwell" when admitted to hospital on Thursday with multiple health conditions.

On Friday, a 90-year-old unvaccinated woman from the Barrington Lodge Aged Care Centre in Hobart died.

She had multiple health issues and was tested for COVID-19 on Wednesday amid an outbreak at the centre.

Premier Peter Gutwein on Friday said the woman was asymptomatic but COVID-19 could not be ruled out as having contributed to her death, so the case would still be listed as part of the pandemic toll.
