A man found dead on a rural property in northwest Tasmania with significant head injuries was likely murdered, police say.
The 59-year-old's body was discovered on Sunday night in the small town of Sprent after emergency services responded to reports a car was on fire.
A Tasmania Fire Service volunteer found the man's body about 15m away from the burning vehicle.
Police are treating the death of the man, who lived on the property in a caravan, as suspicious.
His caravan had been broken into and several guns were stolen from a secure and locked safe.
"We're unaware at this stage whether there was one offender or multiple offenders," Detective Inspector Steve Jones told reporters.
"We are treating it as a murder investigation."
He said it was difficult to say whether it was a targeted attack.
"There has been one report of bikies being in the area and that's being explored, as is all other information," Insp Jones said.
Police have searched a part of the property considered a "point of interest" and believe the car was deliberately lit.
Police want anyone with CCTV footage of roads in and out of Sprent, or anyone who saw people or parked cars at Sprent Forest on Sunday afternoon, to come forward.
