Jakob Dencinger, a suspected former Auschwitz concentration camp guard, has died in his native Croatia.
The 92-year-old was born in present day Croatia (then Yugoslavia) and began serving with the Nazi SS in 1942 while Yugoslavia was under a pro-Nazi puppet government.
His wartime career saw him posted at several concentration camps including the Auschwitz extermination camp.
After the war he moved to Ohio to work in the plastics industry.
He was one of the many suspected former SS guards who collected a US pension - he was forced out of the country for being a suspected war criminal.
An Associated Press investigation in 2014 resulted in barring suspected Nazi war criminals from receiving US government pension benefits.
Mr Dencinger was buried at a local cemetery near Osijek in Eastern Croatia after dying in hospital.
Croatian authorities opened an investigation into his war-crime past but Mr Dencinger refused to comment on the allegations.
His name had been on a list of people to be prosecuted for war crimes, but he was put on trial.
