The ‘Montoya, por favor!’ meme, explained

Sometimes, a language barrier in reality television doesn’t exist when there’s enough passion and pain.

Such was the case this week as a (WARNING!!) very NSFW clip from Spain’s La Isla De Las Tentaciones — or Temptation Island as we know it in the United States — went very viral as Montoya went through every emotion watching his girlfriend cheat on him.

Temptation Island puts couples into — wait for it — tempting situations, intending to test the strength of their relationships. Things did not go well for Montoya and Anita as they saw footage of their significant others engaging in various (and escalating) levels of infidelity. Things culminated with Montoya sprinting down the beach, attempting to make it in time to stop the passion between Anita and another man.

As he ran, the show’s host shouted “Montoya, por favor!” hoping to stop a potential run-in. Immediately, the internet was obsessed with the moment and it became a widespread meme, with everyone from pro soccer teams to the U.S. Open getting in on the action.
