Susanna Reid appeared lost for words after having to share the heartbreaking news a mother and her unborn child were killed after a maternity hospital was targeted in Ukraine.
There was widespread horror when Russian forces shelled a hospital in Mariupol last Wednesday (March 9) amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine which is now in its 19th day.
As the news emerged last week, shocking pictures were shared of the rubble and the rescue efforts and a photo of a pregnant woman being pulled from the debris and carried on a stretcher was captured.
However, details have now emerged as to what happened to the unnamed woman with medics confirming that she and her baby died.
It has now been reported that surgeon Timur Marin found the woman's pelvis crushed and hip detached and while medics delivered the baby via caesarean section, they showed 'no signs of life'.
"More than 30 minutes of resuscitation of the mother didn't produce results,' Mr Marin said on Saturday. "Both died."
During Monday's edition of Good Morning Britain, Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid had been speaking to Daily Mail's Andrew Pierce and Daily Mirror's Kevin Maguire about the latest Russian strike on a Ukrainian base near the border with Poland.
They were also joined by Ukraine MP Lesia Vasylenko who appeared via video link from Strasbourg to discuss the ongoing situation.
As they wrapped up their conversation with Lesia, Susanna said: "Before we go, sorry, we've just seen that you've tweeted this morning... A couple of day ago we saw that devastating attack on a maternity hospital and you've mentioned that the photograph that just hit us all of a woman on a stretcher being carried out, you've tweeted this morning: 'This baby didn't hear the sirens or explosions after all nor will she ever see the war-torn sky or any sky. The mum and baby didn't survive.'"
Susanna struggled to continue, commenting: "That's absolutely devastating," as Richard and Lesia bother described it as a 'war crime' with Lesia adding: "It's s crime against humanity."
As they returned to the studio, mum-of-three Susanna, 54, let out a breath and whispered: "That's devastating isn't it," before turning to her guests in the studio.
"How terrible, I hadn't realised," Andrew said. "We all assumed she made it," he added as Kevin said: "The majority of victims in wars are civilians - completely innocent."
"And the number of children who are losing their lives in this conflict..." Susanna commented before her voice became quieter and viewers unable to hear the rest of her setance.
