Supermarket prices of milk, cheese and eggs compared as food prices soar to 14-year high

The cost of some dairy staples at the supermarket have soared in price as inflation levels continue to rise to their highest levels in 14 years.

A surge in the prices of milk, cheese and eggs have pushed inflation levels to record-highs amidst the current ongoing cost of living crisis. The latest figures from the British Retail Consortium (BTC) found that food prices had risen at their fastest rate since 2008 in August.

It comes after the price of a pint of milk soaring by two-thirds in the past year, leading it to become more expensive than a litre of petrol.

Households across the country have been grappling with rising costs across the board as a knock-on effect from Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The war has pushed inflation levels and seen rising prices across food, energy bills and petrol prices.

The Office For National Statistics (ONS) found that, overall, the UK's inflation rate fell to 9.9 per cent in August from July's 10.1 per cent. Despite not being as high as economists feared, the figure still remains at a 40-year high, with the cost of food and other services said to be "likely to continue to rise."

With household staples such as milk, cheese and eggs driving the food prices increase in August, we have decided to take a look at their prices of each at different UK supermarkets.

Looking online, we checked the prices off a 2.27L bottle of milk, 6 pack of eggs and 400g block of cheese. All own-brand products were looked at, with a few substitutions being made for Waitrose and Morrisons, where the same product was not available.

Both Sainsbury's and Tesco tied for the cheapest prices on eggs, while Sainsbury's, Aldi and Tesco were the cheapest for milk. For cheese, Aldi offered the lowest prices.

These prices were correct as of Tuesday, September 20 2022.
