Two drivers have been killed in a head-on crash on the Sturt Highway at Waikerie in South Australia's Riverland region.
Police said the 78-year-old woman and the 75-year-old man died at the scene, between Range Road and Vasey Road.
Emergency services were called just after 1pm, after the Holden station wagon and Nissan sedan collided.
The drivers were the sole occupants of the vehicles.
The man driving the sedan was from the Riverland and the woman in the station wagon was from Waterloo Corner in Adelaide's northern suburbs, police said.
"Their deaths are the eighth and ninth lives lost on our roads this year as compared to one for this time last year," police said.
Major Crash investigators are examining the circumstances, and the Sturt Highway remains closed between Hardy Road and Old Blanchetown Road.
East-bound heavy vehicles are being diverted at Maggea Road, and those that are west-bound are being diverted at Hunter Road at Paisley.
