Condolence books have opened in cities across Spain for ex-pats and holidaymakers to share their memories and messages celebrating the life of Queen Elizabeth II. Various government bodies and officials in the country have also added their tributes to the former monarch.
Spain's King Felipe sent a telegram offering his condolences to the Royal family. He wrote: "You are all in our hearts and thoughts. We will miss Her dearly."
Three days of mourning have been announced in the nation's capital Madrid, while a single day of commemoration will be observed in Andalusia. In Benidorm, where more than 4,000 British citizens reside, the local authority tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II we wish to express our deepest condolences to the British Royal Family and the People of the United Kingdom."
Condolence books will be open for the general public to sign at the British Embassy in Madrid and all consular offices, including Madrid, Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Ibiza, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife. In Madrid, the book will be open from noon until 4pm on Friday and then daily from 10am until 4pm from Monday.
The embassy stated: "You do not need to make an appointment, but please ensure you bring with you some form of identification and comply with security measures in place." There is also a virtual condolence book at https://royal.uk
Francina Armengol, president of the Balearic Islands, which includes Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, tweeted: "In the name of the people of the Balearics, I offer my sincere condolences...."
Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, posted on social media: “With Queen Elizabeth II ends an era that has marked the history of the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. All my love to the British people, especially those who by choice are residents of Marbella and the visitors who return every year.”
