South Lanarkshire councillors approve huge housing development

A huge residential development in Hamilton has been approved by councillors this week.

The 203-property development by Taylor Wimpey on Meikle Earnock Road received the go-ahead from elected members on the planning committee.

It forms part of the Hamilton Community Growth area and will be built on previously undeveloped farmland.

Houses will range from two -bedroom semi-detached to five-bedroom detached properties, with parking facilities including integral or detached garages, driveways and parking courts.

Councillor Bert Thomson (Blantyre) questioned the facilities that would be available for residents of the new site.

He said: “Are the planners confident that the infrastructure is there, with the likes of shops, bus routes and roads. There is a lot of concern over roads, is the infrastructure in place?”

There will be bus stops installed to provide access, and developers will also ensure an appropriate crossing is put in place.

The development will be split into two halves due to the access from Meikle Earnock Road and a new roundabout will be constructed.

The applicant has confirmed that there will be a community and play area but the council will not maintain this – it will have to be done privately.

It is also advised that the developer will have to pay a financial contribution towards educational facilities.

The proposal received some objections in terms of the impact it would have on existing wildlife on the site, access to the development not being suitable, an increase in traffic and disruption to neighbouring properties during construction.

These concerns were addressed and appropriate measures will be put in place to avoid any disruption.
