Son stunned after mum's ashes lost in last year's floods turn up 12 months later

A son was thrilled to find his mum's lost ashes after a friend spotted a chance post on social media.

Michael Hedger lost his mum's ashes a year ago while scattering them around a tree in St Albans, during a flood.

Posting on a local Facebook group, Suzi Dery whose husband, Corey found the ashes wrote: "Sadly someone's loved one remains?".

The caption was written alongside a picture of an urn marked with the surname "Hedger".

Replying to the post, Mr Hedger, who lives between Sydney and St Albans, confirmed they were his mum's lost ashes.

He wrote: "Amazing that you found my mother’s ashes.

"They were lost in the flood in March 2021. Thanks".

Mr Hedger told Macquarie Port News he had been scattering the ashes around a tree he'd planted in his mother's honour.

He placed the urn on a table in the garden planning to scatter more later when floodwaters swept through in March 2021, Yahoo News reports.

Mr Hedger told Macquarie Port News: "There was still a lot [of ashes] there, and the flood washed everything away and I realised of course that the box was gone."

Although the box was gone, Mr Hedger said he was hoping his mother's ashes may have ended up in the ocean, where they'd scattered his dad's ashes.

He added: "Some of the local fire service's gear turned up at Coogee beach in Sydney so I was thinking my mother had gone out to sea and I thought, well that's nice.

"I think Mum would have thought this was very funny."
