Solid waste management to be improved in north Chennai

The Greater Chennai Corporation is planning to improve various aspects of solid waste management in the polluted parts of north Chennai.

Work on biomining of the Kodungaiyur dump yard is likely to be taken up shortly. After the legacy waste is cleared from more than 250 acres, green spaces are expected to be developed in the area.

The civic body is also planning to create awareness among conservancy workers of the need for proper sweeping of streets. Every 500 metres of a road will be cleaned by one worker.

The civic body is likely to deploy more mechanical sweepers in north Chennai. At present, they are mostly used in central and southern parts of the city, especially on VVIP routes, including the roads around the Raj Bhavan and Kamarajar Salai. More streets in other parts of the city are expected to get mechanical sweepers shortly, civic officials said.
