A Morrisons shopper picked up more than groceries during a visit to the store. The customer, named Annie, saw what she thought was a balloon on the floor in the car park.
But when she ran over it with her trolley it turned out to be an envelope stuffed with thousands of pounds. But rather than pocketing the find she handed the cash over to police saying: "I only did what was right".
Annie, from South Derbyshire, found the envelope containing £3,800 in cash in the car park of Morrisons in Swadlincote. She told Derbyshire Live how she ran over it and as she did it popped open.
She said she noticed money was coming out of the envelope so she took it home then reported it to Derbyshire Police. The money has since been returned to its owner after they came forward to claim it.
Annie has now been given a big thank you from both the grateful owner and officers from the Mercia Safer Neighbourhood Team. The officers visited her and handed her a thank-you letter from Derbyshire police.
They also brought her flowers and a box of chocolates. And to top it all she was given some of the cash she found by the owner.
Responding to the visit from police, Annie said: "When I saw the envelope on the floor, I thought it was a balloon and I pushed my shopping trolley over it to pop it.
"The envelope popped and loads of money fell out. I took the money home and could not rest worrying about the person who had lost it. I only did the right thing."
Sergeant Nizzer, of the Safer Neighbourhood Team, and Officer Bob were quick to praise Annie for her actions. They said: “Words cannot describe Annie. She is a truly amazing lady who deserves the thanks and praise of the whole community. Well done.”
