Eric Scott Turner, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to be Secretary of Housing, testifies at a Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs hearing for his pending confirmation on Cap

Scott Turner has been confirmed as the new housing secretary, a crucial role in President Donald Trump's domestic agenda. Turner, a former NFL player, Texas state representative, and White House senior aide, was confirmed in a 55-44 vote, with only two Democrats supporting him.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is responsible for enforcing federal housing laws and allocating funds for housing assistance programs. The majority of HUD's budget goes towards aiding lower-income families, the elderly, disabled individuals, and addressing homelessness and community development.

Turner's appointment comes at a time when housing costs are a top concern for many Americans. He is set to tackle issues such as rising housing costs, economic development in struggling cities, and reducing homelessness rates, particularly among veterans.

Turner is the second professional football player to lead HUD, following in the footsteps of former Rep. Jack Kemp. He is also the only Black American member of Trump's Cabinet, succeeding Ben Carson.

During his confirmation hearing, Turner emphasized the need for more housing options in the country, including multifamily units, single-family homes, duplexes, condos, and manufactured housing.

Prior to his current role, Turner served as the Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, overseeing the 'opportunity zone' program aimed at attracting private investment to distressed communities. Under his leadership, the program secured $50 billion in private investments, revitalizing many neglected areas.

Turner expressed his commitment to expanding the program's efforts to provide Americans in underserved communities with opportunities for business growth, improved housing, and self-sustainability.

Sen. John Barrasso praised Turner's role in the success of the opportunity zone program, highlighting his ability to drive investments that have positively impacted struggling communities.
