Scotland to come to standstill ahead of Queen's funeral

The Queen's funeral will take place in London on Monday

SCOTLAND is set to come to a standstill as the Queen’s funeral takes place in London.

The funeral of Queen Elizabeth is taking place at Westminster Abbey, with the day declared a bank holiday by King Charles III.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will attend the funeral along with several other world leaders including Joe Biden and Jacinda Ardern.

The Scottish Government previously confirmed that all schools across the country would close whilst colleges and universities will also shut their doors.

Shops, including retail outlets and visitor attractions such as museums and libraries will not open for the bank holiday.

Some health services will be impacted although NHS Scotland has confirmed that measures were being put in place to ensure “vital” healthcare can still be provided.

The Scottish Government said: “Health boards have been given guidance to support their planning for the holiday which underlines the importance of essential healthcare services continuing.

“This includes pre-planned treatments, and the winter vaccination programme. Patients should visit their local NHS board website for further information.”

Public transport is expected to operate as normal.

The monarch died at her Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire on September 8 before her coffin travelled to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

King Charles III then led the procession up the city’s Royal Mile to St Giles’ Cathedral.

Around 2000 people are expected to attend Monday's funeral.
