Revenue take part in garda checkpoint as multiple arrests made on motorway

Gardai, in collaboration with Revenue and the Road Safety Authority, made a number of arrests after setting up a multi-agency checkpoint on the M8 over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Cork North Roads Policing participated in the checkpoint, which was mounted on the motorway near Mitchelstown.

Gardai detected two drivers under the influence of drugs and another under the influence of alcohol.

All three were arrested and their cars were seized.

Other vehicles were also found to have bald and unsafe tires, no insurance and no motor tax.

A garda spokesperson said: “Cork North Roads Policing participated in a multi-agency checkpoint this Bank Holiday Friday on the M8 near Mitchelstown. This was in collaboration with the RSA and Revenue.

“Gardaí from Cork North Roads Policing, Drug and Detective Units and the Garda Dog Unit were supported by members of our Active Mobility team using the latest technology to detect vehicles committing road traffic offences.

“We detected two drivers under the influence of drugs, and one drunk driver. We also detected vehicles with bald and unsafe tyres, no insurance and no motor tax.

“Three people were arrested and vehicles seized.”

If convicted, those arrested for being under the influence will be automatically fined and disqualified from driving for a set period of time.

Repeated or serious breaches may result in being sentenced to prison.

Driving with bald or worn tyres is also an offence and carries a fine of €80, along with two penalty points endorsed on the licence on payment of the fine for commission of the offence, or four penalty points following conviction in the courts.

Those without motor insurance or tax could now face a fine of up to €5,000, five penalty points, and at the discretion of the court, a term of imprisonment not exceeding six months.
