Multiple players on the New Mexico State basketball team are facing allegations involving hazing of a student more than once, Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reports. A police report was filed, and the school later announced it was suspending the team’s season indefinitely.
“NMSU personnel were recently informed of new allegations, separate from the events that took place in Albuquerque late last year, involving potential violations of university policy,” it said in a statement. “While those allegations are being investigated, the men’s basketball coaching staff has been placed on paid administrative leave.”
Goodman reports that the team is unclear whether the season will be resumed at some point.
“We have no idea if they will play another game this season,” a source told Goodman. “It’s a complete s*** show over there.”
This report is confirmation that the school’s decision to suspend its basketball season is separate from the incident that happened earlier in the season.
Last November, New Mexico State forward Mike Peake shot and killed 19-year-old New Mexico student Brandon Travis in what the police described as self defense. Peake was allegedly lured onto New Mexico’s campus for a “planned revenge beating” after Peake was involved in an altercation with three New Mexico students weeks before.
