Anglers are returning to some of the most beautiful fishing beats in Scotland next week as Stirling Council Fisheries opens for the new season.
The council owns and manages salmon fishing rights on the Forth and Teith rivers, which provide recreational opportunities for any angler on some of Scotland’s most scenic waterways.
Although the traditional opening celebrations on the River Teith were unable to take place again this year due to the uncertainty around the pandemic, both rivers opened for businesses as usual from yesterday (Tuesday).
Anglers are also able to sample Stirling’s stunning rivers for free for this first week of the season - until Saturday, February 5.
The council’s environment and housing convener Councillor Jim Thomson said: “Stirling is blessed with Scottish fishing gems that offer a large variety of angling opportunities in an amazing range of locations.
“Cancelling the opening day celebrations in Callander was not a decision we took lightly but it was necessary given the situation with pandemic at the time.
“The main thing, however, is that our wonderful waterways will be back open as normal for the start of the season and we can’t wait to welcome back our community of loyal anglers and receive new visitors.
“And if you want to see why Stirling’s rivers reel in anglers from far and wide then why not take up our offer of a free permit for the first week of the season?”
Anglers can fish on the Rivers Teith and Forth for nine months for just £200, while those aged between 12-21 can now fish the whole season for only £15. Children up to the age of 12 can fish for free with a paying adult on a catch and release basis.
Vice convener Councillor Danny Gibson said: “Stirling Council continues to offer some of the best value for money fishing in the UK as we want to encourage a wide and diverse range of people to fish on our beautiful beats.
“Whether you’re a seasoned angler or new to fishing, you will have a fantastic experience on our scenic rivers which meander through picturesque countryside and the history of the nation.
“The iconic River Teith is renowned for its fishing and produces fantastic runs of salmon along with large runs of sea trout every season. The River Forth beat, meanwhile, sits in the footprint of the historic Stirling Castle, is easily accessible and there are many spots on offer.
“Cast off in Stirling in 2022 and you’ll be hooked.”
Stirling Council Fisheries promote salmon conservation by issuing tags to anglers to limit the number of salmon that can be taken away while still providing a full season of fishing.
Councillor Thomson added: “Our fisheries staff also have a proven track record in managing our waterways responsibly to preserve fish stocks while extending opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy the angling experience."
