A third rare species of turtle has washed up on a Mayo beach in what is the third instance in a month.
The Loggerhead sea turtle washed up in Belmullet in Mayo this past Sunday which does not usually occur as this type of turtles is not found in Irish waters.
This is due to Irish waters being too cold for these turtles which can result in them being stunned if they find themselves in it.

After the turtle washed up, it was safely transported to Oceanworld Aquarium in Dingle after Sea Turtle Rescue and Reporting Ireland, reported the incident.
Posting on the official Sea Turtle Rescue and Reporting Ireland Facebook page, they wrote: “This is the third sea turtle in the past month, so please keep a look out as more may wash up in the coming weeks.
"Loggerheads are not normally found in Irish waters and get carried here on the North Atlantic Drift.
"As our waters are too cold they get ‘cold stunned’ and many die before they wash up. However, some of the sea turtles that wash up on our beaches are still alive.
"You may not notice any movement but if you gently touch near the eye, or squeeze some of the soft tissue on their rear flippers you might get a reflex (ideally wear some gloves or sanitise your hands afterwards).
"If there is a sign of movement, please place turtle in a cardboard box on a damp towel. Do not attempt to warm it up. And please get in touch with your nearest vet immediately or call one of the aquaria, such as Oceanworld Aquarium Dingle, Galway Atlantaquaria or Exploris aquarium. Please message us too and if the turtle is clearly dead we will try to collect the turtle ASAP. "
