Rare spine condition Syringomyelia means little Millie can't stand or walk

A little girl aged one can't walk or even stand unaided due to a rare spine condition. Little Millie showed no health conditions early in life.

But it started to become clear that her motor skills weren't developing as they should. Mum Rhian Hibberd took her to see doctors and she had an MRI scan to see whether she had cerebral palsy.

The scans came back clear, but doctors noticed that Millie, from Selby, North Yorkshire, had cysts on her spine. It is a rare condition known as Syringomyelia, reports YorkshireLive.

Rhian said: "She is not able to walk, she can't stand unaided. She can commando crawl, that's her main way of getting around and she can just about, only recently, start to four-point crawl. It's having quite a significant impact on her gross motor skills.

"I think the biggest shock has been for us, is how little the NHS seemed to be doing with it as well. We're still on waiting lists for the NHS but we did see a private neurosurgeon, who also works for the NHS, and the suggestion was that we could just get a new MRI scan every 12 months just to monitor the cyst on her spine."

Now, Rhian is fundraising to take her daughter to a specialist centre in Barcelona, Spain. There, doctors can perform spinal surgery to prevent the disorder from spreading any further.

It is also hoped the treatment may alleviate some of her current symptoms as well. However, it costs £20,000 to pay for the treatment and so Rhian has launched a JustGiving campaign. You can donate here.
