Rare 50p coin sold for £225 and there are more in circulation

People have been told to check if they have a rare 50p coin after one sold for hundreds of pounds on eBay. One seller managed to sell the coin for £225 after listing it on the site - and there are apparently still thousands of them out there.

The 50 pence coin was released in 2009 and was part of a Blue Peter competition. Nine-year-old Florence Jackson won the competition and her drawing of an athlete doing the high jump was printed on to the coins.

These coins were released ahead of the 2012 Olympic games in London, reports Manchester Evening News. It is estimated around 20,000 coins were produced and were never officially put into circulation.

Many of these 50p coins did enter everyday transactions and so you could be sitting on a small fortune. The coins originally sold for £1.09 - but they're now worth a lot more, with some that have sold for as much as £286 on eBay in recent months, reports the Echo.

People have been told to look out for the Blue Peter 50p coin from 2009 (PA/MEN)

One lucky seller just received a huge £225.01 for theirs, after attracting 17 different bids, with the sale price jumping considerably after starting at £9.99. The item, which sold on June 19, was listed as a "rare uncirculated Blue Peter winner's edition 50p coin pack 2009".

If you come across one of these coins, the first thing you should do is check the year on it. This is because a second edition of the coin was minted in 2011.

About 2.2million coins were made and released into circulation, meaning these will not be worth nearly as much.
