Rachel Bloom’s one-woman stage show Death, Let Me Do My Show is set to debut on Netflix in the early fall after being filmed during performances at the Williamstown Theater Festival at Williams College in Massachusetts. The show, which began its run on July 5 and concludes on July 14, will be captured during the July 12 and July 13 performances.
The genesis of the show dates back to 2019 when Bloom, known for her work on The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, had crafted a musical stand-up performance with plans for a 2020 tour. However, the onset of the pandemic delayed those plans. Tragedy struck when Bloom's friend and collaborator, Adam Schlesinger, passed away from COVID-19 shortly after the birth of Bloom's daughter in March 2020.
This series of events prompted Bloom to rework her show, delving into her struggles with processing the recent challenges she faced, including Schlesinger's death and other personal traumas. Despite the heavy subject matter, the show maintains Bloom's signature blend of humor and original songs.
In a candid interview with THR in September 2023, Bloom shared how humor and lighthearted content served as a coping mechanism during her difficult times. She highlighted the theme in her show that humor can provide solace and momentarily distract from the inevitability of death.
Directed by Seth Barrish, Death, Let Me Do My Show has enjoyed successful runs in various cities, including Off-Broadway in New York, London, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Bloom also showcased the production at the Netflix is a Joke Festival in Los Angeles earlier this year.
