Queen's kind gesture to Meghan Markle away from crowds during first trip together

The final installment of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's six-part Netflix documentary is here - bombshells and all. But royal fans will be delighted to learn that as well as touching on difficult topics, the new episodes also feature a conversatyion about a heart-warming interaction between Meghan and her late grandmother-in-law.

In episode four of the show, which aired Thursday morning, The Duchess of Sussex spoke of her first official engagement with the Queen. Reminiscing on the special occasion, which saw the pair travel overnight on the royal train to Chester for a day of fun, Meghan revealed how she was nervous and the Queen tried to put her at ease.

Meghan said: "I treated her as my husband’s grandma, and knowing that of course there has to be a completely different sense of propriety in public, when you’re sitting and having breakfast to just be able to talk."

The Duchess of Sussex went on to share a sweet gesture the Queen made towards her when they were away from the crowds, in the privacy of the car.

"When we got into the car in between engagements she had a blanket and she put it over my knees and we were sitting in this car with this blanket and I thought 'I recognise and respect and see that you’re the Queen, but in this moment I’m so grateful that there is a grandmother figure because that feels like family'

"And because I was so so close with my grandmother," Meghan said, adding she had taken care of her grandmother "in her final years".

Remembering her time with the Queen, Meghan continued to recall the fun they had, saying that that engagement was "such a good day, we laughed".

During the day, they officially opened the Mersey Gateway Bridge in Widnes and the Storyhouse cultural centre before sitting down for a lunch in Chester Town Hall.

Ahead of the Chester visit, the Queen also kindly gifted the Duchess of Sussex a pair of pearl earrings, which she wore for the big day.

The stunning jewellery closely replicated the pair worn by the Queen.

But that wasn't the only thing the two shared, as they were both spotted giggling away together and beaming at each other throughout the engagement.
