Queen's funeral bank holiday closures so far - full list including shops and schools

Businesses and employers have begun announcing their plans ahead of the Queen's funeral bank holiday next week.

One of the first acts of King Charles was to declare a bank holiday the day his mother Queen Elizabeth II will be laid to rest. Millions of people could get the day off on Monday, September 19, but the bank holiday rules mean not everyone is entitled to do so.

Firms across the UK are making known their plans for the day, although the full slate of closures will be confirmed in due course. The Mirror has put together the businesses so far that have announced they'll be closing.

The opening times of supermarket chains vary on bank holidays, but some have announced they are closing their doors during the Queen's funeral.

Asda is the latest retailer to announce a partial closure. A spokesman confirmed all Asda stores will be closed until 5pm on September 19.

Waitrose and Morrisons are also set to shut next week to mark the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

As a mark of respect, large Tesco supermarkets will close all day, and smaller Express stores will shut until 5pm. Tesco UK chief executive John Tarry said: "We want to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, as well as our gratitude to Her Majesty The Queen for her unwavering service."

Sainsbury's will pause online shopping and close all its supermarkets. However, its smaller shops and petrol forecourts will open from 5pm to 10pm.

The firm, which also owns Argos, confirmed all Argos shops will be shuttered.

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"Our convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm-10pm to allow our customers to pick up essential items, while select stores in central London will open to serve those attending the funeral in person. We thank our customers for their understanding."

A spokesperson for the John Lewis Partnership, which owns Waitrose and John Lewis, said both brands will shut their doors for the day of the Queen's funeral.

The spokesperson added: "When full details of the funeral are confirmed, an exception may be a very limited number of Waitrose stores on the route of the funeral procession to serve members of the public who we know will be lining the route for many hours. These shops will, however, close for the funeral itself."

Ultimately, it is up to each business to decide if they'll stay open or close as they are not forced to shut on the day.

M&S said it will halt customer deliveries on the 19th and close stores with "limited exceptions" in London and Windsor albeit these shops will be shut during the funeral itself.

Homebase, WHSmith, B&Q, Primark, Argos and John Lewis have all said they will be shutting on the day of the monarch's funeral.

Primark has also confirmed it will close all 191 stores on the bank holiday to honour the Queen.

A spokesperson said: "Our stores, depots and Head Office in the UK will be closed on Monday 19th September to give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects and watch the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We will reopen as normal on Tuesday."

Poundland and B&Q have also confirmed they will shut all their stores on September 19. Likewise, file Wilko under the list of retailers closing all stores.

This story will be updated as more chains confirm closures.

Will pubs be open during the Queen's funeral?

Most entertainment venues in the hospitality industry tend to remain open for bank holidays. This appears to be true for the Queen's funeral, with no pub chains confirming their closure on that day so far.

Wetherspoons have gone a step further by announcing discount prices on Thursday, September 15.

For local or independent pubs, it will be the decision of the individual firms to open up, so it is best to double check with them before heading out on the bank holiday.

Will workplaces be open during the bank holiday?

Each workplace can decide to open up or not during the bank holiday, so you will need to confirm plans with your employer. The government has provided guidance for employers and employees for what to do on bank holidays.

It states: "This is a matter for discussion between individuals and their employer. There is no statutory entitlement to time off for bank holidays, but employers may include bank holidays as part of a worker’s leave entitlement.

"The government cannot interfere in existing contractual arrangements between employers and workers. However, we would expect that many workers will be able to take the day off on the bank holiday.

"We also expect employers to respond sensitively to requests from workers who wish to take the day of the funeral off work."

Will schools be open during the Queen's funeral?

Schools have been confirmed to be closed during the bank holiday.

Headteachers across the country were waiting for news on whether to open their doors on September 19 following the Queen's death, and the King finally confirmed they can keep them closed.

Schools, colleges and universities will all be closed to business on that date.
