PS Plus April releases: Full list of new games

April’s PlayStation Plus games have been revealed ahead of their inclusion on Sony’s subscription service on April 18. Among the highlights are Kena: Bridge of Spirits, a barrage of Doom games including 2020’s Doom Eternal, and two Wolfenstein games.

They follow the release of the latest PS Plus monthly games on April 11, including Meet Your Maker, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Tails of Iron.

All three can be played on either PS4 and PS5, and as usual will be available until the games cycle comes around again at the beginning of May.

Last month’s games, now departed, were Battlefield 2042, Minecraft Dungeon,s and Codevein.

April’s new PlayStation Plus games

PS Plus Extra and Premium

April sees the addition of 16 new titles to the PS Plus Extra and Premium game catalogue.

Highlights

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

A story-driven adventure game with cute character designs that wouldn’t look out of place in a Pixar movie. You play as Kena, a young spirit guide, who can control a team of tiny spritelings known as the Rot. The critters are cuter than their name would have you believe. All told, the game is a throwback to PS2-era fantasy titles, with a heaped spoonful of easy puzzles thrown in for good measure.

Doom Eternal

(Bethesda Softworks)

A frantic, first-person shooter that sees you blasting, hacking, and slashing your way through a devilish horde of enemies in a future hellscape. Doom Eternal is a propulsive action game that is constantly hurtling forward, with no time to stop for a breather — unless you want to become demon food.

This month, you will also be able to play a bunch of older Doom games on PS Premium, including Doom 1-3 and Doom 64.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

The German version of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Bethesda)

Travel to an alternative future where Nazis rule America with an iron fist. As a member of the Resistance, your job is to spark a second US revolution by blasting every fascist scumbag that comes across your path. Expect a high body count and a massive arsenal of heavy-weapon artillery in this good, old-fashioned first-person shooter.

Also included in this month’s games line-up is Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, a standalone prequel that spans eight chapters.

Other PS Plus Extra and Premium games:

  • Riders Republic
  • Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
  • The Evil Within
  • Slay the Spire
  • Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
  • Bassmaster Fishing
  • Paradise Killer
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure
  • Dishonored: Definitive Edition
  • Doom
  • Doom 2
  • Doom 3
  • Doom 64

April’s new PlayStation Plus monthly games

Meet Your Maker

Meet Your Maker is the most mysterious of the new PlayStation Plus games, because it is a brand-new title. You build a fortress out in a Mars-like wasteland and then attack other players’ outposts in first-person shooter raids.

We have no idea if this one is any good as, being an online game, it has only just gone live. However, a few video game journalists have had previews.

“The combat looks extremely enticing for people who love first-person shooters like Doom,” says IGN.

Meet Your Maker could be the next big thing or a total flop. But, if you get involved on day one, you’re less likely to be annihilated by a 14-year-old within the first five seconds.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

(Sony Interactive Entertainment)

Those after something lighter and breezier may prefer 2020’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Sackboy is the mascot of the Little Big Planet series of games, which let players create 2D platforming levels as well as play them.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is more conventional, a 3D platform adventure game that might be compared to a 3D Mario title. Less ambitious, then, but a good fit if you like to relax when playing, rather than testing your creativity.

This one is suitable for most members of the family, too, with a PEGI 7+ rating.

Tails of Iron

Tails of Iron rounds off the trilogy of PlayStation Plus additions for April 2023. It’s a side-scrolling 2D fighting adventure game with some role-playing elements. This means you get to level up your character and choose the weapons and items they have.

You play as a cute, hand-drawn rat. But this is a tough game, which has drawn comparisons to the Dark Souls series.

The game lasts between 7.5 and 9.5 hours according to How Long To Beat, though, making it the snappiest of this month’s games if you are up to the challenge.

Meet Your Maker, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Tails of Iron are available to PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium subscribers. And once claimed, you’ll have access to them as long as you remain subscribed.

What are the benefits of PlayStation Plus?

What you get from PlayStation Plus depends on the tier to which you are subscribed. If you go for the cheapest option, Essential, you get access to monthly games, like the three listed above, access to multiplayer, and cloud storage for all your game saves.

Jump up to PlayStation Plus Extra and two extra bits are unlocked. These are the Game Catalogue and Ubisoft+ Classics. They are both libraries of titles that can be accessed freely as long as you are subscribed. There are hundreds of PS4 and PS5 games in this collection to download and play.

Pay for the top-tier PlayStation Plus Premium tier and you can access the Classics Catalogue. This allows streaming of a large collection of older titles from the PS3, PS2 and PS1 eras — it functions like a video game museum. Premium also includes Trials, time-limited versions of games not found in the all-you-can-eat games Catalogues.
