Atlus’ fantasy RPG Project Re: Fantasy, from the makers of Persona, is still alive, and it’s coming in 2024 as Metaphor ReFantazio. Atlus debuted the game’s first trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase and highlighted an ambitious array of styles and a deep, dark plot.
Metaphor takes place in a world that looks like someone spilled Shin Megami Tensei all over it. It’s a blend of what looks like real-world settings and fantasy architecture with a dash of surreal otherworldliness like you’d expect from Persona 3. The story seems to center on the contest to become the realm’s next ruler, something that apparently requires “the faith of the people.”
Except this is a dark Atlus RPG, so naturally, it’s not that simple. Factions face off against each other, evil spirits interfere and offer you their power, there’s a mouse with a sword, plenty of interpersonal drama, and an airship that doesn’t actually fly – because a giant, multi-legged monster carts it across the land.
It looks like Metaphor is a class-based RPG as well. One short screen showed the party screen, with you – the “Travelling Boy” – as the party leader, with three allies, and Gallica, your fairy navigator. Everyone except Gallica has a class, such as seeker, thief, or knight, and a rank that goes from 1 to Mastery at level 20.
There’s a lot going on in the trailer, and hopefully we’ll see more from Metaphor ReFantazio in the coming months.
