Popular fizzy drink brand Lilt to be axed after 50 years and renamed

After 50 years, the popular fizzy drink brand Lilt is set to be scrapped in a major shakeup. But it's not going for good, just having a bit of a make-over, with the tropical drink to be given a new name by its parent brand Coca-Cola.

The drink, which was first launched in 1975, is set to be branded as a new Fanta flavour - Fanta, pineapple and grapefruit. Since Lilt was first created, it's taste has changed slightly over recent years, as well as its logo - and now its moniker.

Produce publication The Grocer reported Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) said: "Keen Lilt fans may have spotted a gradual transition as the drink has made its way into the Fanta family over the past few months, with changes to its packaging and logo.

“Some have even hypothesised on social media that Lilt may be becoming part of the Fanta brand, and one even went as far as producing their own news broadcast-style video.”

VP of commercial development Martin Attock, explained that the main priority of the announcement was to "reassure Lilt’s loyal fanbase that absolutely nothing has changed when it comes to the iconic taste of the drink they know and love. It’s still bursting with tangy tropical flavours. It’s just got itself a new name."

The new product of the Fanta family will be available in stores from today (Feb 14), in 330ml cans, 500ml bottles and two-litre bottles. There will also be a zero-sugar version available.

For many, Lilt has a special place in the hearts of people who grew up with the beverage. There have been plenty of reaction to the news on social media, both in the form of memes and heartfelt dedications.

@Martingrantross tweeted: "30-somethings and 40-somethings who haven’t drunk Lilt since 1998 left devastated by today’s news." @SenseiCarl_ added: "Lilt has been discontinued. I don’t think I want to live in a world without Lilt in it. What’s the point anymore."

@Shereehankir1 admitted: "Used to love that !!! But Tastes absolutely shocking now!!!" @BenHoldenPrime quipped: "This was an uncalled for attack."

An advert being shared online highlighting the change by Fanta reads: "Lilt now part of Fanta?! Introducing Fanta Pineapple and Grapefruit. SAME Totally Tropical Taste than you know and love but new name."

Pictures of the new branding show the drink will still have the same shaped bottle and green cap. But there have been some changes made to the logo and label - including different colours and graphics.
