A popular aviary centre has closed after an outbreak of avian flu.
Botanic Gardens aviaries in Southport closed their doors yesterday in response to the latest outbreak of bird flu. Mandatory housing measures for all poultry and captive birds are to be introduced to all areas of England from Monday, 7 November.
The news comes as the United Kingdom has faced its largest-ever outbreak of avian influenza with over 200 cases confirmed since late October 2021. Risk to bird populations across the country has been deemed "very high".

Martin Mere has been closed to the public since early October after an outbreak at the wetland centre. Both centres will now remain closed for the foreseeable future.
The introduction of the housing measures comes after the disease was detected at over 70 premises since the beginning of October, as well as multiple reports in wild birds. The Chief Veterinary Officer is now encouraging all bird keepers across England to use the week to prepare, including taking steps to safeguard animal welfare, consult their private vet, and expand housing where necessary.
A statement on the Botanic Gardens Facebook page said: " Botanic Gardens aviary will be closed from today onwards in response to the latest outbreak of Avian influenza (bird flu). Mandatory housing measures for all poultry and captive birds are to be introduced to all areas of England from 00:01 on Monday 7 November."
