Police vehicle responding to emergency call crashes into car at busy junction

A police vehicle responding to an emergency call smashed into the side of car closing a busy major road into Liverpool City Centre.

Merseyside Police received reports one of their vehicles had crashed into a blue Volvo at the junction of Pall Mall and Leeds Street at around 11.20am today, Monday, November 14. Two fire engines and the search and rescue team from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service arrived shortly after the crash and found a passenger trapped inside one of the cars.

Fire crews and police officers assessed the passenger until North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) arrived who continued the assessment. Fire crews helped remove the trapped passenger who was taken to hospital for further treatment.

A spokesperson for NWAS confirmed to the ECHO the passenger was a woman in her 20s. It is not yet clear what injuries she suffered in the crash. Merseyside Police said the injuries were "minor".

Another passenger in the car was already out before the arrival of the emergency services with no injuries. The second vehicle had three occupants who also had no apparent injuries.

Following the crash armed police officers were seen on Leeds Street. The ECHO understands the armed officers were in the police vehicle involved in the crash.

Pictures taken by the ECHO at the scene showed significant damage to the front of the police vehicle, while the Volvo had damage to the back right wheel. Debris from the smash was scattered across the road at the junction forcing Leeds Street to be closed.

Congested traffic was diverted up Pall Mall towards Vauxhall, while vehicles turning onto Leeds Street from Scotland Road were forced to go up Vauxhall Road. Leeds Street was reopened shortly after 1pm after both vehicles involved in the crash were removed.
