Police Dog Amber is licking her lips in anticipation of the sticky treats to come after helping a South Wales Police roads officer retrieve his car keys. PD Amber was thrust into action after the officer lost his keys in Merthyr - and what made it all the more frustrating was that his Volvo patrol car was brand new.
Police tweeted the officer lost the keys "after a foot pursuit with a male". However, the keys were found by keen-nosed Police Dog Amber. While Amber spared the officer's blushes, it looks like they will still incur a 'cake fine'.
'Cake fines' are a tradition in the emergency services that see colleagues insist on cake if their work mates commit minor infractions of informal work-related rules or etiquette. According to the spoof Cake Fines and Offences Act of 2018, which can be found online, Infringements liable to incur cake fines include crashing an emergency service vehicle, being late for the start of a shift, and causing or permitting colleagues to be late off shift.
Tweeting about the incident that led to the fine, the South Wales Police Dogs and Horses account wrote: "You all know about cake fines right? So to the officer @SWP_Roads who lost his brand NEW patrol car keys @SWPMerthyr after a foot pursuit with a male. Luckily PD Amber was nearby and assisted in their recovery P.s Here’s a pic of the doggy cakes she’d like. Woof."
All police dogs must first become experts at basic obedience training. They must obey the commands of their handler without hesitation and this is what keeps the inherent aggression of the dog in check, and allows the officer to control how much force the dog is using against a suspect. Treats are used as a reward when the dog does good work.
