Peperami launches meat-free 'Vegerami' for Tesco customers

A vegetarian version of Peperami has been released. The so-called "Vegerami" has been launched from today (May 9), following some chicken-flavoured veggie bites that were launched by the snack company last year.

Peperami announced the news on Twitter on Monday, May 9, saying that the snack is now available in Tesco. They wrote: "It’s finally here! A lot of you have been asking me if I was ever going to release a Vegerami Stick. Lucky for you lot, we have! Go out and grab some from Tesco now!"

They are made with plant protein and are 64 calories per stick. Peperami is just one more convenience food that has branched out to a more meat-free society, following the McDonald's, KFC and Greggs launch of vegetarian versions of popular meals and snacks.

However, it is unclear how well the snacks will go down with some consumers, as the Vegerami stick is vegetarian, not vegan, as it contains egg. Between 2014 and 2019 there were 600,000 vegans in the UK - a proportion that Peperami has now isolated from its new product. Peperami is also known for being a beef jerky brand, which is naturally not something most vegetarians will reach for.

However, the snack is intended to reach the vegetarian and flexitarian market as a helpful option to those who want to reduce their meat consumption.
