The man charged with the assault and attempted kidnapping of Paul Pelosi said he was planning to hold his wife Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi hostage and 'break her kneecaps'.
According to court papers filed today, suspect David DePape told police if Mrs Pelosi told him the 'truth' he would let her go but if she "lied" to him he would break "her kneecaps".
In a chilling description of the incident, the documents explained DePape wanted her to be wheeled into Congress as a threat to other Members of the House.
It said the suspect viewed Mrs Pelosi as the "leader of the pack" of lies.
According to the documents, Mr Pelosi told officers he was asleep when the suspect came into the bedroom and stated he wanted to talk to “Nancy.”
Court documents say DePape wanted to wait for Mrs Pelosi to return home depsite Mr Pelosi saying it would be days.
Mr Pelosi then managed to alert police to the intruder.
On arrival at the San Francisco home officers saw the incident had escalated with the intruder and Mr Pelosi grappling for a hammer.
As officers crossed the room, the attacker allegedly wrestled the weapon off the 82-year-old victim and struck him over the head.
Although needing surgery, he is expected to make a full recovery.
First responders searched DePape's backpack finding a roll of tape, white rope, one hammer, one pair of rubber and cloth gloves,and a journal, the Justice Department said.
They also found zipties in Mr Pelosi's bedroom.
According to the court affidavit, DePape explained his plans to the police in a recorded interview.
The document read: "DEPAPE stated that he was going to hold Nancy hostage and talk to her. If Nancy were to tell DEPAPE the “truth,” he would let her go, and if she “lied,” he was going to break “her kneecaps.”
"DEPAPE was certain that Nancy would not have told the “truth.” In the course of the interview, DEPAPE articulated he viewed Nancy as the “leader of the pack” of lies told by the Democratic Party.
"DEPAPE also later explained that by breaking Nancy’s kneecaps, she would then have to be wheeled into Congress, which would show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions."
The suspect was found to have lived in a garage in Richmond, California, for the last two years.
On the search of the garage agents seized two hammers, a sword, and a pair of rubber and cloth gloves.
DePape is charged with one count of assault of an immediate family member of a United States official with the intent to retaliate against the official on account of the performance of official duties, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
DePape is also charged with one count of attempted kidnapping of a United States official on account of the performance of official duties, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
