Patrick Mahomes reveals secret to Chiefs TE Travis Kelce’s success

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce are set to participate in “The Match” charity golf challenge,  against NBA All-Star duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors, for a 6:30 p.m. start on June 29 on TNT. The competitive matchup of famous teammates is expected to translate from their usual workplaces to the golf course.

Mahomes was a guest on TNT on Thursday night before the network’s NBA playoff coverage. Speaking with Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson, the reigning MVP took time to answer some football questions while promoting the upcoming golf even, beginning with what they’re up to at OTAs.

“I think they give us like an hour to spend on the field. And you know, Coach Reid is old school; he gonna take up that whole hour,” said Mahomes explaining OTAs to the panel. “So we’re out there working getting after a lot of young guys, got some veterans like Trav (Travis Kelce), and Chris Jones and stuff like that out there too. So I mean, we get in, get our work in and get out of there and try to get ourselves ready for the season.”

The Chiefs recently wrapped Week 1 of OTAs on Wednesday as the team is scheduled to regroup for the second week on May 30th. Mahomes made sure to fill the group in on the chemistry he has with his fellow All-Pro teammate in comparison to their opponents on the golf course.

“I think kind of similar with Steph (Curry) and Klay (Thompson),” said Mahomes. “I think it’s just that chemistry that we have on the field. I know where he’s gonna be. If you drew Travis’ routes during games, you would have no idea what to call it. He just goes out there and plays football. And I think just me having that chemistry and knowing where he’s going to be up. I’ve been trying to get into him as fast as possible, and having coach Reid and how many great players around me has made it easy for me. And we’ve been able to win two Super Bowls, and I’m gonna keep traveling around. We’re gonna try to win as many as possible before we’re all done, and we’ve got to hang them up there.”

The Inside the NBA crew followed up with the question many teams haven’t had the answer to regarding the secret to Kelce’s dominance on the field.

“It’s because he never runs the actual route Coach (Andy) Reid calls. He just lets Travis (Kelce) do whatever he wants out there.” said Mahomes, trying to hold back laughter, “He’s good enough to not get in trouble. I think that’s how he’s been his whole entire life because he can just kind of get by and use his athleticism but not get in trouble. So that’s Travis for you. And luckily for me is on my football team, and I can throw him the football.”
