A fire that broke out on the roof of a building was stopped before it could spread thanks to a quick-thinking passerby.
The incident happened on South Great George's Street on Tuesday night. An ambulance heading back from a case was flagged and alerted to the blaze. Firefighters from the Dublin Fire Brigade found that the decking and plastic roof on the building had gone on fire. They managed to extinguish the fire before it could spread to the entire building.
A spokesperson for the Dublin Fire Brigade said: "An ambulance from HQ was flagged down on the way back from a case last night and alerted to a fire on a roof on South Great George's Street. Firefighters discovered decking and a plastic roof alight. "Crews were able to extinguish the fire before it extended into the building." It was a busy day for the DFB crew as a number of fires broke out due to the sweltering temperatures.

Firefighters extinguished flames at Tolka Valley Park in Glasnevin as they warned about the risks of leaving flammable substances on the grass during particularly hot weather. Additionally, they were also called to an incident of a bonfire in a garden yesterday. The spokesperson continued: "Bonfires like this are illegal. They are also extremely dangerous given that we are currently in a 'Condition Orange' fire alert.
"Trees/bushes/grass are all extremely dry and fire spread will be rapid."
