A prolific shoplifter has been jailed and banned from a number of local stores as police crack down on repeat offenders. Dale Tainton, of no fixed abode, admitted stealing from the Co-op in Ruddington on January 7.
The 45-year-old had a magnetic de-tagging device when neighbourhood police officers caught him. Tainton was jailed for eight weeks after pleading guilty to shoplifting and going equipped to steal when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on January 16.
Tainton, who has a long history of theft offences, was also made the subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), which bans him from entering any Co-op store in Ruddington, Keyworth, West Bridgford or Cotgrave. The order lasts for three years and if Tainton breaches it he is committing a criminal offence.

Police Constable Stephen Piper, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This kind of repeat shoplifting is a blight on our communities and will not be tolerated by Nottinghamshire Police. Shop theft harms everyone living and working in our towns and villages.
“We are working hard to make Rushcliffe the best possible place to live and work and this ongoing campaign against shoplifters is a big part of that.”
Inspector Rob Lawton, neighbourhood policing inspector for Rushcliffe, said: “We know that a disproportionate number of shop thefts are committed by a relatively small group of offenders. By targeting those people and working with local businesses we are already seeing some very promising results.
“Tainton will be subject to a criminal behaviour order, which will send a strong message to other offenders. I hope it also reassures our business owners how seriously we take this offending. I’d like to thank PC Piper for his hard work."
