NI football coach's stock on the rise following Kenyan Premier League title win

A football coach from Northern Ireland is celebrating after clinching the Kenyan Premier League title on the final day of the season.

Lisburn man Jonathan McKinstry guided Gor Mahia to the championship, his side finishing just one point above nearest rivals Tusker following a thrilling climax to the campaign.

Gor Mahia - also known as K'Ogalo - went into the season finale having won just one of their previous four league games. It was a run that had attracted some criticism from fans.

But those jeers turned to cheers on Sunday as McKinstry and his players settled the deal in style.

He moved to Kenya last summer to help Gor Mahia claim their 20th league title. Sunday's emphatic 4-1 win over Nairobi City Stars confirming their status as champions.

McKinstry told Eric Njiiru after Sunday's game: "So few coaches and players get to experience moments like this. There are 18 teams in this league with 30 players at each of them, yet it is us who gets to experience this.

"And especially this season which has been so challenging. It has been well documented that in pre-season there were a lot of challenges. There were days when we had seven or eight players training because of the off-field issues.

"To come back from that, and to come back from the transfer ban that we had. We had a lot of young academy players...

"If you went and asked 100 people on the street in July last year, did they thought K’Ogalo had a chance of winning the league, maybe five or 10 of them would have said yes. Most people thought we would be mid-table this season because of the issues off the field.

"But the players have stepped up and grown up a lot. It is just fantastic.

"These young guys deserve this . They are going to enjoy it tonight and hopefully the rest of the week.

"And it has been a great day."
