NFL standings 2023: Jaguars back on top in AFC South

The Jacksonville Jaguars are back in first place in the AFC South after back-to-back wins in London.

The division, which the Jaguars won last year, has been turning upside down on a nearly weekly basis with all four teams hovering around .500 through the first month of regular season play.

The Jaguars were the only team in the AFC South to win in Week 1, but losses to the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans sent the team from first to last. But a 23-7 win over the Atlanta Falcons and a 25-20 win against the Buffalo Bills have the Jaguars back in the driver’s seat.

Here’s what the standings in the AFC look like with only a Monday night game left to be played in Week 5:

AFC South

Peter van den Berg-USA TODAY Sports
  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: 3-2
  2. Indianapolis Colts: 3-2
  3. Houston Texans: 2-3
  4. Tennessee Titans: 2-3

Indianapolis came out on top of a divisional matchup against the Titans on Sunday. But it’s the Jaguars that have the division lead thanks to a 31-21 win against the Colts in Week 1. A rematch in Week 6 will determine which team takes sole ownership of first place.

AFC East

Jim Rassol / USA TODAY NETWORK
  1. Miami Dolphins: 4-1
  2. Buffalo Bills: 3-2
  3. New York Jets: 2-3
  4. New England Patriots: 1-4

The Jaguars’ upset victory over the Bills opened the door for the Dolphins to take back the top spot in the AFC East after losing to Buffalo a week ago. Miami took advantage of the opportunity, cruising to a 31-16 win against the New York Giants.

AFC North

Philip G. Pavely-USA TODAY Sports
  1. Pittsburgh Steelers: 3-2
  2. Baltimore Ravens: 3-2
  3. Cleveland Browns: 2-2
  4. Cincinnati Bengals: 2-3

The Steelers snatched first place from the Ravens with a wild comeback win Sunday, scoring a go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute left.

AFC West

Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports
  1. Kansas City Chiefs: 4-1
  2. Los Angeles Chargers: 2-2
  3. Las Vegas Raiders: 1-3
  4. Denver Broncos: 1-4

The Chiefs continue to pull away, picking up a fourth straight win on Sunday while the Chargers were on bye. The Raiders could climb back into the mix on Monday when they play the Green Bay Packers.

If the playoffs started today...

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports
  1. Kansas City Chiefs (4-1)
  2. Miami Dolphins (4-1)
  3. Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2)
  4. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-2)
  5. Indianapolis Colts (3-2)
  6. Baltimore Ravens (3-2)
  7. Buffalo Bills (3-2)

The conference record tiebreaker reigns supreme in sorting this out. The Chiefs are 2-0 in AFC play so they’ve got the inside track for the No. 1 seed ahead of the Dolphins, who lost to the Bills. Pittsburgh is 3-1 vs the AFC, while Jacksonville lost to the Chiefs and Texans.
