A former Newcastle tea room that shut its doors more than two years ago is set to reopen under new ownership.
The Teahouse on Eldon Place, Newcastle, has been closed since 2020 after falling into administration - but next month it will be brought back to life by the Northumberland Restaurant Company. The venue was better known as the Quilliam Brothers’ Teahouse before it was sold in 2019 when its founders decided to explore new opportunities abroad.
But now the Northumberland Restaurant Company will reopen the venue under the new name of Claremont Tea House following the takeover of the site, which is part of Newcastle University. The group also recently acquired the DotBagel outlets in Newcastle under the Kennedy and Rhind banner and is co-owner of two other hospitality businesses – Lovage in Jesmond and Novellos in Washington.

Stuart Young, who owns the Northumberland Restaurant Company and its sister brands, said: "We have a proven track record of running high-end cafes and producing amazing baked goods. The recent takeover of DotBagel has allowed us to expand our offering as well as grow the number of sites we have and the Claremont Tea House will give us another strong foothold in the city.
“We’ll be able to offer a really exciting and extended range of products and it will also mean that we are bringing back to life a great venue, right on the university campus and in a busy city centre location.”
The new-look cafe will sell a range of teas, coffees and bakery items from both DotBagel and Kennedy and Rhind. It also plans to serve brunch and lunch, as well as a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan products.
Claremont Tea House will share Newcastle University's Sir Terry Farrell Building with the upcoming Farrell Centre, which is due to open in April as a new public centre for architecture.
