Hundreds of passengers on New York' s Staten Island Ferry had to be evacuated and five people left injured after a boat's engine caught fire.
Frightened passenger were cleared out into New York Harbour on the evening of Thursday December 22 following a fire in the engine room.
The vessel was carrying 868 people and 16 crew members onboard, when it stalled near the popular Statue of Liberty at around 5pm.
Emergency services were then called to a blaze in one of the rooms of the boat, and helped all of the people off onto another boat, where they were brought safely to the St George Ferry Terminal.
Local media reported at least five people were injured with three being taken to a nearby hospital.
Footage of the terrifying moment shows the crowd of passengers all donning bright orange lifejackets.
They can be seen lining up in single file, as they slowly make their way to the exit.
Other worried passengers can be seen grasping their phones as they await further instructions.
Another clip shows an area of the boat completely fogged-out and filled with smoke, as people reach for life jackets and pass them out to others.
The coastguard managed to evacuate passengers in less than an hour as the vessel had been anchored.
Reportedly, the ferry was headed from Manhattan to Staten Island at the time.
The fire happened in the engine room, and had been extinguished by the boat fire suppression system.
New York Fire Department said the fire was contained in the engine room, but will wait 24 hours to monitor temperatures and make sure that the vessel is safe to enter.
