New steakhouse planned for Nottingham city centre but some want more vegetarian or vegan options

A new steakhouse is being planned to open in Nottingham, but some residents have said they would like to see more vegetarian or vegan options in the city centre. A licensing application has been submitted by Tomahawk Steakhouse for the premises on Low Pavement where Carluccios used to be.

Tomahawk Steakhouse is a chain of specialist steakhouses and bar, which also serves beef, fish, vegetarian options and cocktails. If the application is approved, 30 jobs would be created and the steakhouse would be open between 8am and midnight Sundays to Thursdays serving alcohol until closing, and between 8am and 1am the following morning on Fridays and Saturdays serving alcohol until 12.30am.

Those who want to make comments to Nottingham City Council about the application have until June 28 to do so, with the steakhouse hoping to open before September. While some in the city centre are looking forward to it opening, others have said they would like to see more options in Nottingham for vegetarians and vegans.

Luke Greene, 40, from Beeston, said: "I don't care for it because I don't eat meat, we have plenty of places that sell meat and plenty of steakhouses. What we need are more vegan and vegetarian restaurants because there aren't enough in the city."

However others in the city centre said it will help to make Nottingham "come alive again".

Grace Jacovou, 63, from Carlton, said: "It's such a good thing, with Covid and lockdowns then everything shutting down I would love to see Nottingham come alive again. I'd love to see more independent shops and eateries and a steakhouse would be lovely."

Abdullah Al-Harasi, 22, who lives on Carrington Street, said: "There are many alternatives for Italian places around town but there are very few steakhouses. I'm personally not that keen on what is already here, so it would be good to have a place for steak lovers."

Food served at Tomahawk Steakhouse (Tomahawk Steakhouse)

Tomahawk Steakhouse started out in 2017, with one restaurant in North Yorkshire, before adding another two, including in Newcastle. More opened across the north of the country in 2018, and Nottingham is now among a number of locations as the chain looks to expand further and into the Midlands.

A spokesperson for Tomahawk Steakhouse said: "Nottingham is such a vibrant city, and the location we would be in is very good, we're excited about coming to Nottingham. The venue will fit around 100 people in and we'll be creating 30 jobs locally.

"Our steakhouses have a good following where we've opened and we have really easy-going, casual dining restaurants. For Nottingham, with it being where it is, it would be an ideal place to start a night out off.

"We have a number of vegetarian and vegan starters and mains too, so there is something for everyone. We are much more than a steakhouse."
